There are plenty of things the Tampa Bay Buccaneers need to check off their list over the next few weeks as the new league year begins. Right now all eyes are on the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, but soon free agency will be here and with it will come some roster turnover throughout the league.
That's already started in Tampa. Jordan Whitehead, who was brought back last offseason after two years with the Jets, was informed that he'll be released and become a free agent. It's a move that saves $4.5 million to potentially help keep Chris Godwin from leaving, or to spend on finding some pass rush help.
Godwin isn't the only important player with an uncertain future.
Lavonte David just wrapped up his 13th season in the NFL, and it's unclear if there will be a 14th. He's going to be 35 years old next year and his fantastic season in 2024 was tinged with doubt about how much longer he'll be able to play.
That's on the mind of more than just Bucs fans.
Buccaneers GM Jason Licht comments on Lavonte David's future
Tampa Bay's general manager Jason Licht spot about a number of topics at the NFL Combine this week, among them was commenting on David's future with the BUcs.
While nothing has officially been determined, the two sides are expected to meet soon to discuss what happens next. Licht mentioned that he's already spoken with David and, based on his comments at the Combine, doesn't sound too concerned.
"We'll probably talk to Lavonte soon," Licht said. "Give him a little space. We'll probably talk to him when we get back. I talked to Lavonte a few weeks ago. Had a great conversation. You know, of course, you have to make contingency plans, but right now, I'm not stressing."
This pretty much lines up with how the last few offseasons have gone with David, which feels like an indication that good news could be on the horizon.
If his performance on the field is any indication, there's plenty left in the tank. David looked like a vintage version of himself while setting new franchise records and reminding everyone that he's a future Hall of Famer.
Licht mentioned a contigency plan as part of his comments, which is something we all assumed would be the case heading into the offseason. Even if David returns for another season, the Bucs will need to figure out a succession plan for when he eventually does retire. That could happen in the draft, with Tampa Bay being linked to Alabama linebacker Jihaad Campbell, who could benefit greatly from a year of tutelage under David as a rookie.
No matter what happens, David remains a fan favorite and one of the most beloved Buccaneers ever. His Hall of Fame case speaks for itself and his place in the Ring of Honor is earmarked, but it would be nice to get one more season with one of the greatest players in franchise history.
These next few weeks will be telling in whether or not that ends up becoming a reality.
