Latest Buccaneers disrespect just gave Baker Mayfield extra motivation

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have one of the NFL’s most talented offensive units.

Of course, that starts with quarterback Baker Mayfield, who has emerged as one of the league’s top quarterbacks.

When healthy, the team boasts one of the league’s best offensive lines, and there is a talented running back duo of Bucky Irving and Kenny Gainwell.

Even after losing Mike Evans this offseason, the wide receiver room remains one of the league’s deepest. Emeka Egbuka, Chris Godwin, Jalen McMillan and Tez Johnson will be joined by explosive rookie Ted Hurst this coming season.

There is serious talent at every level of the offensive unit, but the group is somehow still being overlooked and disrespected.

Buccaneers offense snubbed in latest rankings

FanSided’s Lou Scataglia ranked the top-10 offensive units in the NFL.

The Buccaneers were nowhere to be found in the top 10, while teams like the Denver Broncos and New England Patriots made the cut.

Sure, those teams had incredible 2025 seasons and made deep playoff runs, but recency bias may be clouding the conversation.

The Bucs have a more talented offensive group than either of those teams. The only real argument is play-calling, where the Broncos have Sean Payton at the helm and the Patriots have the established Josh McDaniels, while the Bucs are rolling with an unknown in newly-hired Zac Robinson.

From a pure talent perspective, the Bucs stack up favorably against both teams. Despite being one of the NFL’s most injured teams last season — never playing a single game with their full starting offensive line while also dealing with a wide receiver room decimated by injuries — Tampa Bay still managed to stay productive. Evans missed nine games and Godwin missed eight.

Even with all of that adversity, the Buccaneers still averaged 22 points per game, compared to 23 for Denver.

The Buccaneers believe in what they’re building and likely aren’t too concerned with outside rankings. Still, constantly being overlooked has to serve as motivation for Baker Mayfield and the rest of the offense.

They’re also just one season removed from ranking top four in total offense, passing yards, rushing yards and points per game back in 2024. An injury-riddled 2025 campaign shouldn’t erase those results or make the football world forget how dangerous this offense can be when healthy.

On the other hand, it’s nice in a way to be the underdog again. The Buccaneers have an opportunity to remind the NFL just how good they really are in the upcoming season.
