It’s a somber day in Tampa Bay, as Lavonte David held a press conference to officially announce his retirement after a prolific 14-year career spent entirely with the Buccaneers.

David ended his career tied with fellow Buccaneers legend Derrick Brooks for seventh all-time in total tackles with 1,714, making them the leading tacklers in franchise history. He retires with 42.5 sacks, 177 tackles for loss (fourth all-time), 33 forced fumbles, 21 fumble recoveries, 14 interceptions and 73 passes defensed, finishing as Tampa Bay’s all-time leader in both forced fumbles and fumble recoveries.

But David’s impact extended far beyond the stat sheet.

David was a cornerstone of the franchise, evolving into a true leader in the locker room and the face of the defense. The organization holds him in such high regard that general manager Jason Licht has pointed to David as the model for the team’s “I am that man” philosophy, the standard used in evaluating draft prospects and free agents, with the front office seeking players who match the criteria and qualities David brought to the organization.

Those qualities will continue to shape the Buccaneers moving forward, ensuring David’s legacy lives on in the organization long after his playing career has ended.

“It’s incredible man,” said David. “You look around and you see it. You see the guys who we got, the dogs that we got. Guys that I’d take the field with any day.”

David spoke emotionally as he thanked his family, former teammates and Buccaneers fans who helped shape his career.

“Thank you guys so much. I love the Krewe forever. The fans, you guys are amazing. You guys are incredible. You guys always was my motivation to wake me up in the morning to keep me going to be able to play the game at a high level for this long. You guys were a part of that and I thank you guys dearly for that,” said David. “At the end of the day, I will always be a Buccaneer. It’s always Bucs for life.”

With Mike Evans departing in free agency earlier this offseason and now David retiring, the Buccaneers are facing a significant leadership void heading into 2026. Two franchise cornerstones who defined the team for more than a decade are now gone, signaling the end of an era and a true changing of the guard in Tampa Bay.
