Mike Evans just got a crystal clear message from Zac Robinson

Mike Evans is one of the most, if not the most, iconic players in Buccaneers franchise history.

He began his career with 11 consecutive 1,000-yard seasons before his 12th season in 2025 was derailed by injuries, ending the historic streak.

Still, even at 32 years old, Evans remains the best weapon in Tampa Bay’s arsenal and the undisputed focal point of the offense. But Evans is also an impending free agent and is taking time to ponder his future, with retirement considered a legitimate possibility.

The Buccaneers introduced Zac Robinson as their offensive coordinator on Tuesday, and he sent a clear message to the organization about his desire to coach Evans.

Zac Robinson wants Mike Evans to remain with the Buccaneers

“I have a ton of respect for Mike and his game throughout his career,” Robinson said. “I know he’s got to work through a lot of things, but I would obviously love an opportunity to work with Mike.”

Robinson declined to comment on whether he has spoken to Evans or if he’s been given any insight into Evans’ future plans, but he still managed to send the future Hall of Fame wide receiver a subtle, but clear message.

Robinson showed up to his introductory press conference with his family, and his son Cooper, who was celebrating his second birthday, came dressed for the occasion wearing a Mike Evans jersey.

That fashion choice wasn’t a mistake. In his own clever way, Robinson made it clear to Evans and the organization that he wants a chance to coach him.

During his time in Atlanta, Robinson demonstrated an ability to get the ball to his No. 1 receiver. Drake London, who has drawn comparisons to Evans due to their similar size and play style, recorded 919 yards and seven touchdowns despite missing five games last season. In 2024, London posted 100 catches for 1,271 yards and nine touchdowns.

Robinson clearly understands the importance of scheming touches for his best playmakers, and it’s easy to imagine Evans thriving in his system if he decides to return for one more season in Tampa Bay.

Evans certainly has nothing left to prove, but he could further cement his legacy and all but guarantee his Hall of Fame case with one more strong season.

He currently ranks 21st all time in receiving yards, but another 1,000-yard season would move him all the way up to 12th. He is also 10th all time in career receiving touchdowns with 108 and is one of just 12 players in NFL history to surpass 100.

Another season could realistically see him pass Tony Gonzalez (111) and Antonio Gates (116) on the all-time list.

Robinson’s job would be significantly harder without Evans, and it makes sense for the incoming offensive coordinator to campaign for the return of the best offensive player in franchise history. But it also makes sense for Evans to want one more shot at going out on a high note, rather than having the end of his career defined by an injury-riddled 2025 season in which he missed nine games.

And if Robinson’s first day in Tampa Bay was any indication, he’s going to do everything in his power to make sure he gets a chance to help write that triumphant final chapter with Evans.
