The Tampa Bay Buccaneers desperately need to get back into the win column. While, on paper, the Arizona Cardinals look like a team the Bucs should be able to beat, there's the whole "Any given Sunday" motto and how any team can beat any other team on, well, any given Sunday.
The Buccaneers sure did their part to help keep the Cardinals in their Week 13 matchup. After punting the football on their first two possessions, the Bucs got into the red zone and had a chance to take the lead over Arizona.
Unfortunately, that's when disaster struck. On 3rd-and-Goal from the Cardinals' 7-yard-line, Baker Mayfield dropped an absolute dime into the hands of Chris Godwin for what should have been a touchdown to put the good guys up 7-0. That's not what happened though.
Godwin, despite the ball being thrown perfectly, couldn't haul it in and the Bucs had to settle for a field goal. Kevin Kugler and Daryl Johnston were on the call for the game and were dumbfounded by what they witnessed on Godwin's dropped pass.
"Mayfield looking over the middle and it's dropped by Chris Godwin! That is not a sentence uttered very often," Kugler said, to which Johnston replied, "Yeah, yeah, this is very surprising because this is a heck of a throw by Baker Mayfield and that is right in the bread basket"
Broadcast booth captured the frustration Bucs fans felt on Godwin’s drop
Kugler and Johnston's reactions summed up exactly how Bucs fans felt in that moment. As Johnston pointed out, it was a perfectly-thrown ball and, as Kugler pointed out, Godwin isn't exactly known for dropping passes, especially ones as well-thrown as that one was. It was definitely shocking.
Fortunately, the Bucs scored a touchdown on their next possession (to Tristan Wirfs, no less) to take a double-digit lead. Still, if the Bucs go on to lose this game, that dropped ball by Godwin might be what fans ultimately point to. Let's hope it doesn't come to that.
