Losing Lavonte Davis wasn't fun, but every Tampa Bay Buccaneers fan knew it was coming. The Buccaneers did too, so when free agency began, they targeted a physically gifted linebacker.
The draft also provided pass rush help in the form of Rueben Bain, Jr. Now, the Buccaneers have a formidable one-two punch on the front seven. Anzalone, however, may be the key to the entire defense.
Todd Bowles loves to throw fire at opposing quarterbacks, but having the right personnel on the defensive side of the ball is imperative. This year, the Bucs have Anzalone, and he is about to make fans very happy.
Alex Anzalone is set to provide the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the veteran linebacker they desperately need
The newest member of the linebacker group will play on the weakside, and he is already showing a penchant for getting to the quarterback, or into the pocket at least. Over his career, he has just 13 sacks, but 2026 could provide him with the opportunity to match it.
The Buccaneers are hoping so. Anzalone isn't a depth piece; he is the green-dot leader they need. He is a perfect fit for Bowles' rapid pressure attack that combines both straight blitzing and disguised/delayed rushes.
"I am definitely going to have some free runs at the quarterback and get some stats and forced fumbles and things of that nature."Alex Anzalone
If he is able to make the impact that is expected, the Bucs' defense is going to stand out and make life a lot harder for opposing quarterbacks.
The NFC South isn't comprised of stellar quarterback play. The Saints' Tyler Shough is still developing, Michael Penix will need to hold off Tua Tagovailoa's charge for the starting job, and Bryce Young is still trying to find his footing.
For Anzalone, it doesn't matter. He has good vision and reaction speed, allowing him to move quickly on the QB, whether they are a running quarterback or a pocket passer. The best part may be how he handles pass coverage as well.
Anzalone has a knack for filling the passing lane, and that will bode well for him in Tampa when he isn't rushing. Bowles will likely use the LB as a decoy from time to time, showing blitz and then pulling off into coverage while another player rushes the quarterback. He sells it well.
