The Seattle Seahawks reportedly don't want to trade their talented fourth-year pass rusher Boye Mafe. However, their current organizational structure may make him expendable by default, and his potential availability should raise Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht's antenna.

ESPN's Adam Schefter notes that Seattle has "big contracts to pay in their future," but "can't afford to pay everyone." Teams are inquiring about Mafe's services, knowing the Seahawks' collection of burgeoning young players and finite financial resources could render him the odd man out.

With the Seahawks' situation in mind, Licht should be working the phones to bring Mafe to Tampa Bay, if he isn't already.

Latest Boye Mafe-Seahawks rumors just opened a door the Buccaneers can't ignore

Mafe's 72.5 Pro Football Focus pass-rushing grade ranks 36th out of 120 qualified options at his position entering Week 9's Sunday slate. He's yet to record a sack through eight games in 2025 and has produced 13 tackles (one for loss) and two pass deflections. Nevertheless, the 2022 second-round pick's 21 total pressures and 19 hurries highlight a disruptive perimeter presence.

Not to mention, Mafe has a strong track record that affords at least some benefit of the doubt. We've seen him take down opposing signal-callers time and again, especially since his role expanded in 2023. He amassed 28 quarterback hits and 15 sacks across each of the past two campaigns, showcasing elite athleticism and a relentless motor.

Bucs veteran edge defender Haason Reddick notably missed the club's Week 8 win over the New Orleans Saints due to an ankle sprain and knee soreness. Tampa Bay's bye came at an opportune time for him, though the issues may linger beyond the break; Mafe helps fix the problem.

Even if Reddick is back in the lineup sooner rather than later, the Bucs can still use some extra firepower up front. Losing standout defensive lineman Calijah Kancey to a torn pec until at least January has left them with a massive void.

Currently in the final season of his rookie pact, Mafe is slated for unrestricted free agency this offseason. Nevertheless, he turns 27 at the end of November and can factor into the squad's (or anyone's) long-term plans with a strong audition. Key pieces of Tampa Bay's front seven, including Reddick and longtime franchise icon Lavonte David, are on expiring deals.
