3 players Buccaneers can still sign or trade for before Week 1
By Brad Smith
With the preseason officially wrapped up, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers finalized their 53-man roster and are set to march into the regular season. Although Tampa Bay had hard choices to make at several positions, they were able to keep their top players on both sides of the ball, along with a few preseason darlings.
Just because the roster has been set doesn't mean that it's finished being adjusted. The Bucs got under the league-mandated minimum but can still find ways to add some talent if it's found. There are still a handful of free agents still looking for work, especially after the mass cuts this week, and trades area always peppered into the week before the season starts.
Tampa Bay doesn't need to make any changes, but if they felt like it the team could add a few more pieces ahead of the season kicking off.
3 players Buccaneers can still sign or trade for before Week 1
LB/DB Markquese Bell, Dallas Cowboys
Last season, Dallas held one of the top safety duos in the league with free safety Donovan Wilson and strong safety Malik Hooker, who helped anchor the Cowboys' lockdown defense. Coupled with the emergence of rookie safety Juanyeh Thomas, Dallas' secondary will be the strong point of their defense in 2024 once again.
With that, Bell has quickly become an odd man out in the Cowboys' defense. In his second season, Bell totaled 94 tackles, three tackles for loss, four passes defended and two forced fumbles in 17 games, all career-highs.
Due to Dallas' surplus of talent at safety, Bell was used in a hybrid outside linebacker role, but was still undersized at 6'3" and 205 pounds. Without much of a need at safety or linebacker, along with a lackluster showing in preseason, Bell could be on the chopping block at the 53 man roster.
If Bell were to hit the free agent market, he would be a prime target for Tampa Bay days ahead of week one. While the Bucs also have two star safeties in Antoine Winfield Jr. and Jordan Whitehead, Bell could slot in as a sub-linebacker next to Lavonte David in relief of KJ Britt, who is entering his first season as a starter.
CB/S James Bradberry, Philadelphia Eagles
Just one year after leading the Eagles with 17 pass breakups and being an All-Pro Second Team Selection, Bradberry regressed heavily in 2024. Per Sports Reference, Bradberry gave up a career-worst 11 touchdowns and a 114.3 passer rating when targeted last season, causing the veteran cornerback to be benched toward the end of last season.
Although the Eagles have moved Bradberry from cornerback to safety during training camp in hopes of getting some value out of him, the 31-year old's spot in Philadelphia is far from safe. Between promsing rookies Cooper DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell and the return of Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, Bradberry could find himself as the odd one out entering 2024.
Outside of last season, Bradberry has been a reliable corner, earning PFF grades of 74.1, 62.8, 79.8, 61.7, and 66.4 in his last five campaigns. In addition, Bradberry has totaled double-digit pass breakups in his first eight seasons, six of which with 12 or more pass breakups.
The Buccaneers will enter 2024 with Jamel Dean returning as the team's No. 1 cornerback, with Zyon McCollum slotting in for Carlton Davis III and Bryce Hall, Christain Izien, and Tykee Smith also in company. For such a young and inexperienced group of cornerbacks, Bradberry could be a worthwhile addition for the Buccaneers on a cheap, one-year rental.
RB Javonte Williams
This one is a little outside of the box, and a little crazy, but let's embrace the chaos for a moment.
Following a solid rookie season with over 900 rushing yards, Williams has been a shell of himself in large part to injuries. Over the past two seasons, Williams has totaled just 978 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 264 carries while missing 20 combined games to injury.
Williams, at just 24 years old, is still young and capable of being the starting running back on a team. Even so, Denver showed a lack of confidence in the former North Carolina Tar Heel, drafting Notre Dame's Audric Estimé in the fifth round and signing Blake Watson as a priority free agent. To top it all off, Williams is entering the final year of his rookie deal, and could on his way out of Denver with a slow start to this season.
While running back isn't a position in dire need of help in Tampa Bay, Williams could be a useful power and back for the Bucs to employ alongside elusive backs Rachaad White and Bucky Irving. It would be a luxury addition, but if Williams were to become available, it would be a hard player for the Buccaneers to pass up in free agency.
This wouldn't be an early-season trade, as Denver would need to be thinking about selling at the deadline -- a very real possibility. The Broncos have Jaleel McLaughlin ready to take over and if he starts to heat up early on, then there could be a world where the Broncos want to get out from under Williams and get something in return while the Bucs could seing for the fences and truly go all-in to fix the run game.
