Baker Mayfield had a hilarious reaction to his epic TD run in Week 2 Vs. Lions
By Josh Hill
Two games into his new $100 million contract, Baker Mayfield is making the deal look like a bargain for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
So far this season he's collected six touchdowns, has passed for nealry 500 yards, and has a statement win under his belt. It was a gutsy performance on Sunday in Detroit, one that had Baker's fingeprints all over it in terms of the grit needed to pull out a win.
The Bakery is officially open for business in Tampa Bay, and everything tastes amazing.
One of the highlights of the afternoon wasn't what Baker did with his arm, rather what he did with his legs. Last season he started earning everyone's respect with some angry runs in a win over the Vikings and he turned in the sequel on Sunday.
Baker wheeled out a pair of great runs in the fourth quarter to give the Bucs a lead they wouldn't surrender. The first was a masterful dash to set up what ended up being a career-long touchdown run a play later.
It was a signature moment for Baker, one that will continue to earn him respect both for how he balled out and for his amazing reponse about it after the game.
Baker Mayfield had a hilarious response to learning his TD run was a career-high
After the game, Baker was told that his touchdown run of 11-yards was a career-high, which prompted a classic response.
"11 yards? That's so sad," Baker said before elaborating on how his legs impacted the offense. "I'm not looking to run first by any means, but if the play call is a 'QB Draw,' I'm going to try and make it work. So for me, just let the defense dictate where the ball is going to go, and if I have to make plays with my legs, I'll do that."
It didn't appear that any of his runs were designed, rather it was Baker shifting out of pressure to create something out of nothing. The fact that one of those was a touchdown only goes to show how much his presence in the offense makes it that much better.
Pressure is something he dealt with all day, as Aiden Hutchinson recorded five sacks and was a game wrecking force the entire afternoon. This is what makes his runs even more impressive, as it's Baker adapting to the situation rather than allowing himself to be consumed like we've seen from so many Buccaneers quarterbacks before.
We already knew baker was a different breed, but to see him continuing to build on what he did last year is a fantastic sign for what the future in Tampa Bay holds. If Sunday was glimpse into that, give us all of it right now.
