Blockbuster Buccaneers trade proposal would fix quarterback problem
If you have two quarterbacks, you have none. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers find themselves in this less-than-ideal situation with Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask battling it out for the starting job.
The Bucs haven't named their starting quarterback yet, with Mayfield and Trask sharing top spot on the latest depth chart.
They combined for five interceptions during Tuesday's practice. A dominant performance from the Bucs' defense, but more concerning signs from the Bucs' top two passers.
Either Mayfield or Trask will start for the Bucs in the season opener against the Minnesota Vikings next month, but is either player the long-term solution at quarterback?
What if there were another option?
Blockbuster trade proposal sends Trey Lance to Buccaneers
The San Francisco 49ers are moving forward with Brock Purdy as their starting quarterback, which means former third overall pick Trey Lance could be available via trade.
Alex Kay of Bleacher Report put together a trade proposal that would send Lance to the Buccaneers for picks in the third and fourth rounds next year.
If the Bucs don't believe Mayfield or Trask is their long-term starter, they should consider their options. Kay's trade proposal would provide Tampa Bay with a relatively low-risk deal with huge upside.
Lance was the third overall pick only three years ago, and for good reason.
Kay wrote:
"A rebuilding franchise like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers would be an ideal place for Lance to rehabilitate his career and try to deliver on his potential. The Bucs have little to lose by bringing in a high-upside young passer like Lance after Tom Brady retired without an heir apparent on the roster this spring."

Lance has barely played in his first two years in the league. He started as the backup behind Jimmy Garoppolo and missed almost all of last season due to injury.
He has thrown for 797 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions and rushed for 235 yards and a touchdown in two years for the Niners.
With Purdy starting in San Francisco, Lance needs a fresh start elsewhere. A chance to prove himself as a starter. That opportunity could come in Tampa Bay, where he could compete for the starting job long term.
The alternative for the Bucs is to see how things play out with either Mayfield or Trask. If both quarterbacks struggle, they would likely enter next offseason with a high draft pick, giving them another opportunity to find their next long-term starter.
