While the Carolina Panthers might have reached across enemy lines to try and weaken the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this offseason, it took almost no time at all for old problems to become new again.
Carolina hired Dave Canales as its head coach this offseason, poaching him from the Bucs and forcing a vacancy at one of the most critical positions on Todd Bowles' coaching staff. It was a bit stressful at the time, especially given the context of what it meant for the future of Baker Mayfield in Tampa Bay, but everything worked out in the end.
That extends beyond just how things look in Tampa.
Carolina flexed about how much Canales would be able to do for Bryce Young what he did for Baker, but that's much easier said than done.
Bryce Young threw an interception on the first play of the Panthers' season
Canales and the Panthers opened their season in New Orleans, and while nobody in Tampa Bay will find themselves rooting for the Saints they stepped up to give us our first hilarious moment of the year.
In the first quarter, already trailing, Canales' new-look Panthers offense came out firing on all the wrong cylinders. Young completed his first pass of the season, the only problem was it ended up going to the wrong team.
It took exactly one snap for the Panthers to remind everyone who they are, new head coach or not.
Canales is a good coach, evident by his quick ascension from position coach in Seattle to coach in Carolina in less than a calendar year. Where Bucs fans draw the line is the rivalry with Carolina, which instantly made Canales an enemy despite what he did to help turn things around last season.
There was also the idea that he was reposible for Baker Mayfield's revival rather than the man himself getting credit. That's how his hiring in Carolina was sold, and it rightfully irked Bucs fans who watched with their own eyes what Baker did on his own last year.
Maybe Canales will end up helping the Panthers get back on the right track, but so far things couldn't be off to a more hilarious start for Bucs fans watching from afar.
