Late-round Buccaneers rookie is turning heads at training camp as potential sleeper
By Josh Hill
If there was one thing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers needed to improve this offseason, it was the offensive line.
For the last two seasons the Bucs have faltered behind a line that has been both banged up and simply not good. Losing Ryan Jensen was a massive blow that the team never fully recovered from, and not even the greatness of Tom Brady could help them overcome.
No part of the offense has struggled more behind bad offensive line play than the run game. In back-to-back seasons, the Bucs have had one of the worst rushing attacks in the league despite boasting talent in the backfield. Tampa Bay moved to upgrade things, but the line has already been dealt a pair of season-ending injuries to potential starters.
That has simply opened a lane for a late-round rookie to start turning heads as a potential steal at training camp.
NFL analyst Brian Baldinger heaps praise onto Buccaneers rookie Elijah Klein
Brian Baldinger, a former NFL player and current analyst for NFL Network and Fox Sports, has a knack for spotting things most analysts tend to miss. Nothing points to this more than how often he spotlights Buccaneers players, making him one of the few experts not to be surprised by the team's success last season
He's back at it again, this time pointing out how impressive sixth-round pick Elijah Klein has been in the time he's seen the field.
Tampa Bay made a bet that Graham Barton can help fix the offensive line after taking him in the first round, but he's not the only guy the Bucs are gambling on. Klein might fly more under the radar than Barton, but Jason Licht has shown an ability to identify talent late in the draft and might have done it again with Klein.
He's now in a position to win a starting role after season-ending injuries to Sua Opeta and Silas Dzansi. So far he has looked the part, and while the Bucs would be relying on yet another unproven starter there's something exciting about the idea of the team figuring out two major cogs on its line in one offseason.
There's a lot that still needs to happen, but Licht has hit home runs before and Klein looks like he's going to make his new boss proud.
