Bucs face difficult QB choice: Baker Mayfield or these 5 quarterbacks in 2024?
By Ryan Heckman
Going into the stretch run of the 2023 season, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers still have more than a shot at winning the NFC South.
In a weak division with plenty of question marks, Tampa Bay isn't done yet.
But, we can't help looking forward. Next offseason, there could be several changes, but none more important than the quarterback position. Is Baker Mayfield going to return? Has he done enough to prove he can be the guy?
Realistically, there are a few options the Bucs could look at other than Mayfield. Whether it's a veteran or in the draft, let's take a gander at these options and pick whether or not they'd be better than Mayfield going forward.
1. Kyle Trask
This first one is pretty easy, but it has to be talked about. Kyle Trask is under contract through the 2024 season, and he isn't going anywhere just yet. At the very least, Trask is a valuable backup for the Bucs to have.
But, that might be where it ends. We have already seen a competition between these two, and Mayfield won. We have hardly seen anything from Trask as a pro, but in two years, the Bucs have seen enough through training camp and the preseason to like a journeyman like Mayfield more than the former second-round pick.
If it comes down to these two as the only options next year, once again, it should end up being Mayfield. Is that ideal? Of course not, but he is the best of the two. Hopefully, it doesn't come down to the same quarterback room two years in a row, though.
Verdict: Mayfield
