Monte Kiffin, one of the greatest and most important coaches in Tampa Bay Buccaneers history, has died at the age of 84.

Ole Miss, where the coaching legend had been helping his son Lane Kiffin as a consultant these past few years, announced the news on Thursday afternoon. The news was confirmed by the Kiffin family not long after, with Lane posting a touching tribute to his father.

Kiffin's coaching career spanned over a half century, beginning in 1966 when he took over as head coach of Nebraska and ending last year when he served as Player personnel analyst for his son at Ole Miss.

Of course, there's one specific time period that Kiffin will be best remembered for, and rightfully so.

Tony Dungy hired Kiffin in 1996 to serve as his defensive coordinator, and what followed next was absolutely legendary stuff. Kiffin helped mold one of the greatest defenses of all-time, playing a role in creating the Tampa 2 defense that soon became a standard formation across the league.

What it meant for the Buccaneers, though, was a game-changing style of play that eventually led to a Super Bowl title in 2002. It's impossible to overstate just how critical Kiffin was in helping Tampa Bay emerge from one of the darkest periods in team history, as he ranks alongside the other Buccaneers greats of that time in helping reset the franchise's trajectory.

His time with the Bucs ended unceremoniously and under a shroud of controversy, with a still unspoken about feud with head coach Jon Gruden sullying what should have been a grand send-off.

Kiffin eventually got that, though, returning to Tampa Bay in 2021 when he was enshrined in the team's Ring of Honor.

His impact on the Buccaneers is undeniable. Under Kiffin, eight different Buccaneers defensive players made a combined 36 Pro Bowl appearances, with six also earning All-Pro honors. In the end, four of his players became Hall of Famers -- Warren Sapp, Derrick Brooks, John Lynch, and Ronde Barber -- and his stamp was forever imprinted on the game he loved so much.

Kiffin might be gone, but his legacy will live on forever in Tampa Bay.
