Buccaneers announce throwback Creamsicle uniform game for 2023
By Josh Hill
Bucco Bruce is back!
What was once a laughable uniform has become one of the most celebrated and sough-after throwback jerseys out there. For a time, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers creamsicle uniforms were associated with the horrid streak the team went on to begin its existence in the NFL but has since become one that is respected and worn all over the world.
It’s also one that fans have been clamoring to see return to the uniform rotation for some time now.
The last time the Bucs wore their creamsicle uniforms was back in 2012, but the wait to see them return is over. The team has been teasing the return of the creamsicles for months now, with the latest tease happening on Sunday night.
That seemed to indicate an official annoucement for when the Bucs would be wearing the uniforms was near. It turns out we’d have to wait less than 24 hours to find out which game that is.
Buccaneers throwback uniform game officially revealed
The Bucs announced that the creamsicles will be making a comeback in Week 6 against the Detroit Lions.
We mentioned this as a possibility in our prediction for which game Bucco Bruce would be making his triumphant return, but it snuck in as an honorable mention. The more you think about it, though, the more sense it makes as an absolutely awesome uniform matchup.
Wearing the throwbacks against the Lions harkens back to the old NFC Central days when the two teams would do battle annually. From the showdowns in the 70s, to the clashes in the 80s, and those games against Barry Sanders in the 90s, the creamsicles are deeply embedded in the history of the Bucs and Lions playing each other.
It’s not the first time the old NFC Central days are being honored. The Bucs wore the creamsicle throwbacks back in 2009 when the Green Bay Packers came to Tampa Bay. Of course, that game was memorable for the comeback win over Aaron Rodgers the Bucs mounted, and still stands out as one of the few bright spots fans experienced during the Dark Ages.
Detroit’s colors have barely changed over the years, which means the game will truly look like a throwback without having to try very hard. The Florida sun shining down on the blue, silver, and creamsicle colors feels like something out of a time capsule, but also feel absolutely right.
