It takes two to tango, and now Vita Vea and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are in a full-on quandary. After holding in throughout the offseason program, many felt that Jason Licht would eventually get a deal done with Vea, as he always does with homegrown talent. But he didn't, and now Vea wants out.
Honestly, this could just be the next card for Vea and his camp to play in what are surely some intense contract negotiations. And perhaps Tampa Bay will call Vea's bluff, as he is a career Buc who is still under contract and doesn't have a no-trade clause.
They could theoretically dish him anywhere, and that is a dangerous game for Vea to play.
And while some reports have indicated that Vea has no "preferred destinations," others have said that Vea wants to play closer to where he grew up in Milpitas, California, which is in the Bay Area. So, with the latter criteria in mind, let's rank the possible places that Vea could be playing football in 2026.

Note: For this ranking, No. 5 would be the least preferable for Tampa Bay, and No. 1 would be the most preferable. This is based on the report from The Athletic's Ted Nguyen that Vea would like to play for "a California team or the Raiders."
5. San Francisco 49ers
While the 49ers haven't won a Super Bowl in quite some time, they are always knocking on the door. And the Bucs trading Vea across the NFC to a team and giving them their missing piece on the defensive line would be a tough pill to swallow for the fanbase.
Just imagine Vea rushing next to Nick Bosa, Osa Odighizuwa and a handful of young players or plugging up gaps and letting Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw get downhill against the run. This would thrust San Fran firmly back into title conversations, and that is an absolute no-go for Tampa Bay.
4. Los Angeles Rams
Honestly, Vea going to the Rams is less scary than the 49ers simply because the Rams are already so scary. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter if it's Vea or Aaron Donald, or both, working alongside Myles Garrett, Braden Fiske, Byron Young and Kobie Turner. This group is lethal.
And the Rams already look like insurmountable Super Bowl favorites, so Vea doesn't really change the equation here. Sean McVay's squad appears impossible to get through, and Vea being traded to LA would just be the rich getting richer, whereas the 49ers need him to reach another level.
Plus, the Rams' future draft capital is already depleted after this offseason.
3. Los Angeles Chargers
Trading Vea to the AFC, if all things are equal, would be preferable. And the Chargers are habitual chokers in the playoffs who can't get over the hump, so adding someone with a Super Bowl pedigree at a position of need like Vea may be something they want to pay a premium for.
After losing stud defensive coordinator Jesse Minter this offseason, the Chargers are surely looking for ways to rekindle their defensive spark as well. With all of their early-to-mid-round picks in 2027 and plenty of cap space this year and next year, Vea could make a lot of sense in the AFC West.
2. Las Vegas Raiders
Again, trading Vea to the AFC is preferable, and dishing him to a non-contender would be even better. Plus, the Raiders are flush with draft picks and salary cap space in the coming years, and they need another body on the defensive interior. They, too, could pay a fortune for a player like Vea.
It also helps that the Bucs know Las Vegas GM John Spytek well from his time in Tampa Bay, so they can have faith that a deal could get done that is suitable for both sides. It's not like Bucs fans want Vea not to be playing in the postseason, but not having to see him in the playoffs would also be nice.

Yes, the best destination for Vea in 2026 and beyond is still in Tampa Bay. This whole ordeal is far from over, and a trade request doesn't always mean that a player will be gone. Vea could still easily get a new deal before the season or bet on himself and earn an extension sometime during the campaign.
The Bucs still need Vea to be the glue of their defense in this contending window, and both Licht and Todd Bowles understand how valuable he is. If Vea is going to get extended somewhere, fans should still hope that it's in Tampa Bay.
