Steve Smith threw some petty shade at Baker Mayfield after Buccaneers beat Panthers
By Josh Hill
The housing market is still a mess for most of the country, but Baker Mayfield continues to find free real estate inside of former Carolina Panthers wide reciever Steve Smith’s head.
Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers went into Charlotte and beat the Panthers last Sunday, managing to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat in overtime. It was clear after the game that another consecutive loss bothered the Panthers, something that Sam Franklin trying to confront Bucs players in the tunnel confirms.
Carolina has lost four straight games to Tampa Bay and is just 2-10 against the Buccaneers over their last handful of meetings. It’s been total domination over one of the worst teams in the league, and it’s bothering more than just players on the field.
Baker Mayfield continues to live rent free inside Steve Smith’s head
Probably still upset over the Panthers losing in overtime the week prior, Steve Smith let it be known in more ways than one that he’s not a fan of Baker Mayfield.
Smith was a guest on Pardon My Take recently and hilariously got petty when the topic of how well Baker is playing came up.
“Bro I don't care. He doesn't care about me. I don't care about him,” Smith said when asked if Baker has played better than expected.
It’s a bizarre feud to try and start considering how the two never played together, but then again once a player is part of a rivalry it never leaves them. Unless, of course, you’re Gerald McCoy and you leave the Bucs to sign with the Panthers but let’s not pick at that wound when we have this to deal with.
The conversation started with PFT Commenter and Big Cat prompting Smith to talk about the Bucs and Baker, to which he went so stone cold that the two hosts thought their stream had frozen.
That’s the level of petty we’re dealing with and it’s absolutely glorious. Smith was always an easy player for Bucs fans to hate but to see that he still cares so much about a rivalry he hasn’t been a part of for years is admirable.
It’s also the latest barb in an ongoing feud between Smith and Mayfield that only the former seems obsessed with engaging in. As a TV analyst he’s been tasked with coming up with hot takes for NFL Network and he’s taken aim at Baker in the past.
Of course, Mayfield is still playing and doing so at such a high level that he’s in line to potentially make a second straight Pro Bowl with the Bucs. He’s also leading one of the most high-powered offenses in football and has Tampa Bay turning their season around and potentially on track to make another deep playoff push.
Most of thet time it seems the national media ignores the Bucs, but that tide is starting to change as the team reminds everyone what they’re capable of. The fact that Smith remains so committed to his anti-Baker bit is an extra sweetener to the good vibes flowing through Tampa Bay right now.
