Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ initial 53-man roster includes several surprising decisions

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have finally narrowed down their roster from 93 players to 53 in preparation for the 2026 regular season 

The team can still make changes through trades, waiver claims, or by signing veterans released by other teams, but for now, the initial 53-man roster is set. 

There are several surprises, but on paper, the Buccaneers seem to have assembled one of their most talented rosters in the last few years.

QB (2): Baker Mayfield, Jalon Daniels 

The Buccaneers decided to roll with undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels over veteran Jake Browning as Baker Mayfield’s backup, which to many, was the biggest surprise on the 53-man roster. 

Tampa Bay chose Daniels’ upside over Browning’s experience, as they hope to groom Daniels to be the QB2 for years to come.

RB (3): Bucky Irving, Kenny Gainwell, Sean Tucker

No major surprises in the running back room. There was a brief period of uncertainty as Josh Williams picked up ground on Sean Tucker in the RB3 battle, but Tucker took a pay cut to secure his role. 

Bucky Irving, Kenny Gainwell, and Tucker make for one of the best running back stables in the NFL, and the team hopes to bring Williams back on the practice squad.

WR (6): Chris Godwin Jr., Emeka Egbuka, Jalen McMillan, Ted Hurst, Tez Johnson, Kameron Johnson

The Buccaneers are extremely deep at wide receiver, with a group of five capable wide receivers in Chris Godwin Jr., Emeka Egbuka, Jalen McMillan, Ted Hurst, and Tez Johnson.

Kameron Johnson sticks around due to his special teamscontributions as the kick and punt returner.

David Sills V, who has experience in Zac Robinson's scheme, will open the season on IR and won't count toward the 53-man roster.

TE (4): Cade Otton, Payne Durham, Bauer Sharp, Ko Kieft

The Buccaneers kept four tight ends, spelling the end of Devin Culp’s time on the active roster. 

It was the expected result as Durham and Kieft are far superior blockers, and the team is high on the rookie Sharp.

OL (10): LT Tristan Wirfs, LG Ben Bredeson, OC Graham Barton, RG Cody Mauch, RT Luke Goedeke, OT Ben Chukwuma, OT Justin Skule, OG Dan Feeney, OG Luke Haggard OG Billy Schrauth

The Buccaneers have one of the NFL's best starting offensive lines, so there was no suspense for the first five spots.

But it was a big question mark how the Bucs would narrow down their backup offensive linemen. They chose Ben Chukwuma, Justin Skule, Dan Feeney, and rookie Billy Schrauth.

The team has an abundance of young offensive linemen they parted ways with that could come back on the practice squad.

DL (7): Vita Vea, A’Shawn Robinson, Calijah Kancey, Elijah Roberts, DeMonte Capehart, Rakeem Nunez-Roches, Elijah Simmons

The defensive line is one of the Buccaneers' deepest positions. There were no surprises as Tampa Bay rolled with the six obvious choices.

Players like Josiah Green and Jayson Jones could be in consideration for the practice squad.

OLB (5): Rueben Bain Jr., Yaya Diaby, Al-Quadin Muhammad, David Walker, Anthony Nelson

The Buccaneers made the difficult, but necessary move to cut ties with former second-round pick Chris Braswell.

Tampa Bay has one of the deepest pass rush groups they’ve had in years, and this group will be the key to a defensive turnaround in 2026.

LB (5): Alex Anzalone, Josiah Trotter, Christian Rozeboom, SirVocea Dennis, Caden Fordham

The Buccaneers rebuilt their inside linebacker room and will enter the season with two new prospective starters in veteran Alex Anzalone and rookie Josiah Trotter.

Christian Rozeboom and SirVocea Dennis will take on backup roles, while undrafted rookie Caden Fordham is one of the biggest surprises to make the roster and will contribute primarily on special teams.

CB (5): Zyon McCollum, Benjamin Morrison, Jacob Parrish, Ayden Garnes, Keionte Scott

Zyon McCollum, Jacob Parrish, and Benjamin Morrison lead the way on the perimiter while rookie Keonte Scott is the expected starting nickel corner.

Undrafted rookie Ayden Garnes cracked the 53-man roster as a depth option after an incredible training camp and preseason.

Special teams ace Josh Hayes is headed to IR and could play a role later in the season.

S (3): Antoine Winfield Jr., Tykee Smith, Miles Killebrew

Arguably the most surprising move the Bucs made was keeping only three safeties. Ifeatu Melifonwu was the team's final cut, leaving Miles Killebrew as the only backup behind Antoine Winfield Jr. and Tykee Smith.

The team will almost certainly make a move in the coming days to add depth to the room.

They'll likely try to bring a combinaton of Melifonwu, J.J. Roberts, or Rashad Wisdom back to the practice squad.

Specialists (3): Chase McLaughlin, Riley Dixon, Evan Deckers

Tampa Bay's specialists have long been set in stone, as they're running it back with the same group as last year.
