The Tampa Bay Buccaneers join a growing list of teams that are either building new stadiums or upgrading their current venues.
According to the Tampa Bay Times, the Buccaneers will meet with the Tampa Sports Authority next week to discuss a $1 billion renovation of Raymond James Stadium.
Built in 1998, Raymond James Stadium is due for upgrades if ownership wants it to remain a host venue for future Super Bowls or college football championship games.
If the proposal is approved, it would force the team to relocate away from Tampa to Orlando for one season while the stadium is being renovated. The Jacksonville Jaguars have already laid the blueprint, as they’ll be playing their 2027 home games at Camping World Stadium in Orlando while TIAA Bank Field receives a transformational renovation they’ve dubbed “Stadium of the Future.”
The news comes at the same time as the Tampa Bay Rays pursue a $2.3 billion stadium across from Raymond James Stadium, set to open for the 2029 season. Tampa sports fans could be getting a major upgrade to their fan experience in the next few years.
What to expect from Raymond James Stadium’s renovation
The biggest gripe that fans have with Raymond James Stadium is the extreme heat, especially during September home games.
The Jaguars’ stadium renovation will feature a 70%+ heat-reducing transparent canopy. Perhaps the Buccaneers will take a page out of that book and add more shade to the stadium to make the heat more bearable.
The renovation could also add more seats to increase capacity. During the Tom Brady era, demand was so high that the team temporarily added 3,600 seats in a section called the “Krewe’s Nest” in the south end zone. This section was removed after the 2022 season, but permanent seating additions could both serve football fans and accommodate other events hosted at the venue such as concerts or Monster Jam.
Other upgrades will likely include immersive technology improvements, such as enhanced video boards. Raymond James Stadium was named the NFL’s number one stadium technology experience in 2016 and 2017, so it’s a feature the organization clearly takes pride in. Expect them to continue to invest in keeping the fan experience cutting-edge.
More details about the renovations are expected after the Buccaneers meet with the Tampa Sports Authority next week, giving fans a clearer picture of what’s next for Raymond James Stadium.
