Even Todd Bowles said it publicly, but the Tampa Bay Buccaneers organization had a big offensive coordinator problem last season. Josh Grizzard was far from the only reason why the Bucs offense didn't click, as a myriad of injuries and poor individual performances down the stretch played their role.
But Bucs fans were quite frustrated with the play calling from the inexperienced Grizzard, who was a massive downgrade from Liam Coen. And it is telling that in his first season as the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Coen led Trevor Lawrence and Co. to the playoffs while the Bucs sat at home in January.
Now, the Buccaneers have former Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Zac Robinson running the show, and the Bucs are hoping that he can help turn Bucky Irving into Bijan Robinson, Cade Otton into Kyle Pitts, and Emeka Egbuka into Drake London.
There is a lot of optimism around Robinson and his willingness to not only use the tight end position for star quarterback Baker Mayfield, but also to let the entire Bucs offense play to its strengths as individuals.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Zac Robinson has a head coaching gig in his future?
CBS Sports NFL writer Pete Prisco fired off a series of quick Tampa Bay Buccaneers takes on social media, and one of them was pretty interesting. He said that he thinks Zac Robinson is the second coming of Liam Coen and is head coach material, "Zac Robinson gives off the Liam Coen feel to offensive football. He will be a head coach."
While that would mean Robinson could be one-and-done in Tampa Bay if the Bucs offense goes off again, that's a great problem to have, and the Bucs would take one year of Robinson and then him leaving if it means the Bucs roll than rather one year of Josh Grizzard and the Bucs miss out on the playoffs in the NFL's worst division.
Having a great coordinator who leaves for a head coaching job because he is so successful is the best problem to have, because it sure beats the alternative. And while Bucs fans probably didn't like the feeling of Coen getting poached by the Jaguars, it was 100 percent a better feeling than what Grizzard left them with last season.
Robinson did a lot for an Atlanta Falcons offense that didn't have a quarterback nearly as good as Baker Mayfield, so with a deep group of pass catchers and running backs, Bucs fans are excited to see what 2026 holds.
