There's plenty of blame to go around for future Mike Evans' departure from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and he's no exception. However, head coach Todd Bowles is firmly in everyone's crosshairs following the future Hall of Fame wide receiver's decision to join the San Francisco 49ers.
A long statement from Evans' agent, Deryk Gilmore, makes it clear the Buccaneers legend's exit goes far beyond money. Bowles wasn't mentioned by name, though part of the message was ostensibly directed toward him, and his comments on the news only heighten the drama.
Several high-ranking members of the Buccaneers thanked Evans for his contributions to the organization, both on and off the field. Bowles' message via the team's official website was respectable, though it quietly exacerbated the problem: their declining relationship was at the forefront of this outcome.
"Mike Evans was a true competitor who always found a way to rise to the occasion for us. It's hard to see him leave, but I respect his decision. More than anything, I want to thank him for all the work he poured into making himself an elite player and the leadership he displayed during his outstanding 12-year run here. He provided all of us with special moments on and off the field that we won't soon forget. I wish him well as he continues his Hall of Fame career."Todd Bowles on Mike Evans
Todd Bowles' parting message to Mike Evans puts Buccaneers fans on even higher alert
Reading Bowles' words after the thought process behind Evans leaving should certainly raise eyebrows. The two weren't on the same page, and their remarks highlight the disconnect. By the sound of it, the former knew he and the latter could no longer coexist.
Evans' representative talks about wanting to "compete for another Super Bowl, to play in an offensive system that challenges defenses" (h/t ESPN's Adam Schefter). Yet, reading between the lines, he didn't have faith in Bowles to put him and the Bucs in positions to succeed.
One of the greatest players in franchise history effectively gave up on Bowles; there may not be a more scathing indictment of him. The Krewe was already losing confidence in his ability to lead them to the promised land. Evans, one of the biggest names in free agency, signing with the 49ers further validates that notion.
