Tristan Wirfs helped to locker room after suffering brutal knee injury vs. 49ers
By Josh Hill
After all the injuries the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have suffered to key players this year, the last thing anyone wanted to see was another domino fall. That appeared to have happened on Sunday, when Pro Bowl tackle Tristan Wirfs needed to be helped back to the locker room after suffering what might be a potentially serious knee injury.
Wirfs got his knee caught in the grass and bent in an awkward direction while trying to block a Nick Bosa rush. For the most part, Wirfs had been holding his own against Bosa, which makes the Bucs losing him even more devestating.
Beyond just this matchup, though, the last thing Tampa Bay needed was to lose another key offensive player. The Bucs are already down Chris Godwin for the rest of the season, and nothing about the injury to Wirfs looks encouraging.
Tristan Wirfs leaves Week 10 after suffering potentially serious knee injury
Here's a look at the play where Wirfs got injured. His knee buckling and bending the way it did is the main reason for concern. It's far too early for a diagnosis, and the best source will be the team, but Twitter Doctors seem to think this might be serious.
Wirfs was down for several minutes, and the only good thing was that the cart wasn't needed to get him off the field. Still, he was helped off while walking gingerly and the fact that he couldn't put any weight on his leg is less than ideal.
Not long after he left the field, Wirfs was helped back to Tampa Bay's locker room in the same fashion. Once again, the lack of need for a cart is encouraging but it's about the only positive thing to take away from all of this.
Making things worse is the fact that Justin Skule came in to replace him. Losing Wirfs was bad enough, but swaping in the guy who got cooked earlier this year by Aiden Hutchinson and having him block Bosa isn't what anyone would call a favorable matchup for Tampa Bay.
