Tampa Bay Buccaneers fans aren't exactly loving the narrative surrounding Baker Mayfield and the organization right now. It doesn't appear that the two sides are close to agreeing on a new extension and that means that, if a deal isn't worked out before the end of the 2026 season, Mayfield will enter free agency.
One fan base that is particularly excited about that thought is the Minnesota Vikings faithful. Adam Carlson of The Viking Age recently pointed to Albert Breer's post on X where he shared Rick Stroud's post talking about Mayfield and the Bucs' (lack of) discussions surrounding a new deal.
Breer simply said, "Interesting situation. Baker Mayfield headed into a contract year."
Bucs fans won't like how closely Vikings fans are monitoring Baker Mayfield contract situation
Naturally, this made Vikings fans perk up because they're currently in a situation where they're relying on Kyler Murray to be their starting quarterback. It's either that or J.J. McCarthy so, yeah, things aren't great in the Twin Cities at the moment when it comes to the quarterback position and it's no wonder they're hoping things fall through between Mayfield and Tampa Bay.

"2026 will be a contract year for Baker Mayfield. If he and Tampa Bay can't work out an extension, there is a chance the 31-year-old quarterback could hit free agency and cash in with a team other than the Buccaneers.
"It's not like Mayfield hasn't earned an extension from Tampa Bay. Since taking over for Tom Brady in 2023, the former first-round draft pick of the Cleveland Browns has led the Buccaneers to a 27-24 record and earned two Pro Bowl nods.
Baker has provided stability at the quarterback position while attempting to fill the shoes of a legend in Tampa Bay. In Minnesota, Vikings fans would love to have stability after what they saw on the field from the offense last season."
Yes, Vikings fans would definitely love to have a quarterback like Mayfield on their team. He rarely misses time and is one of the most ferocious competitors in the league. Bucs fans love Baker and hope that the two sides can agree to a new deal that keeps him in Tampa Bay long-term.
If not though, the Vikings will likely be one of the teams circling the wagons and for good reason. Let's hope it doesn't come to that though.
