Many Tampa Bay Buccaneers wanted Todd Bowles to be fired for his key role in the team's embarrassing collapse last season, and they were quite disappointed to see The Glazers keep him around despite firing literally everyone else.
So just how bad is Bowles compared to his peers? Here is how he stacks up against the other head coaches in the NFC South.
1. Dave Canales, Carolina Panthers
It is a gut punch for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers that their former coordinators David Canales and Liam Coen are doing so well, getting other teams in the south to overachieve and make the playoffs while they literally missed out on the postseason to Canales's Carolina Panthers last season. Canales has overachieved greatly with this Panthers team, which has one of the worst rosters in the NFL and no business winning the NFC South over the Buccaneers. But Canales is a coach who relates well to his players, creates a positive environment, and knows his X's and O's.
2. Kevin Stefanski, Atlanta Falcons
While Kevin Stefanski is certainly no friend to Baker Mayfield, he was a two time Coach of the Year and took the Cleveland freaking Browns to the playoffs and won a game, and he had to navigate the most toxic organization in football. The actual worst coach in the divsion last year, Raheem Morris, is now gone, and Stefanski represents a clear upgrade. He had the Minnesota Vikings wheeling and dealing and a step away from the Super Bowl with Case Keenum under center, so with the Falcons quarterbacks, he could actually do some damage. Stefanski is not a foe that the Buccaneers should be taking lightly.
3. Kellen Moore, New Orleans Saints
A young and innovative coach who once led one of the best offenses of the modern era in college football at Boise State, Kellen Moore was nothing more than a clipboard holder at the NFL level, but his football mind was so prolific that it did not take him long to climb the coaching ladder. A promising offensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys, Moore is already brewing something intriguing in the Bayou, and he is one of those fresh young minds who has a lot more to offer than someone like Todd Bowles.
4. Todd Bowles, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
There is little doubt that Todd Bowles brings up the caboose of the NFC South. He has been thoroughly underwhelming in all of his years as an NFL head coach, whether with the New York Jets or Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and his most common record is one of mediocrity; he even failed to have a winning season with Tom Brady. After how poorly the Bucs defense played last season, his reputation as a defensive mind has taken a major hit, too.
