Buccaneers’ Most Hated Man Tournament: Round One, Game Seven

facebooktwitterreddit

The Buccaneers have a history with a lot of highs, and a lot of lows. There have been many players, coaches, and front office people that the fans hate.  We continue now to choose the most hated.

Over the last forty seasons, the Buccaneers have given their fans a lot of memories that would be better considered as nightmares.  Poor on-field performances, bad coaching, and much more.  There have been some strong performances, even a Super Bowl win.  But there are still a greater number of personalities that Bucs Nation hates to this day.

But, who do the fans hate the most?  There are two games left in the first round.  Here comes game number seven of Bucs Most Hated Man:

In one corner, we have Chip Kelly! Philadelphia fans don’t like this guy. The jury is still out on whether 49ers’ fans will like this guy. But one thing is for sure, Bucs’ fans don’t like Chip Kelly.

For anyone who doesn’t remember, Chip was considering leaving Oregon prior to the 2012 season, before he ever joined the Eagles. He interviewed with the Bucs, and as Rick Stroud wrote at the time, was all but signed to a deal to become the coach of the team.  He was all set to replace Raheem Morris, there were simply “details to work out”.

But how did it turn out?  I guess they didn’t work out those details.

As soon as he was set to be finalizing a detail, Kelly pulled a Bill Parcells.  He left the Bucs at the altar, deciding to remain the head coach of his Oregon Ducks, citing the need to complete “unfinished business”.

So, Kelly stayed at Oregon, ended up with the Eagles before dismantling that team, losing his job, and now ending up with the 49ers.

How did it work out for us?  Well, we ended up with Greg Schiano instead.  Everyone knows how THAT turned out.

Is he the one that wins this battle, Bucs Nation?

And in this corner, we have Hugh Culverhouse! For our younger readers, Hugh Culverhouse owned the Bucs, back when the logo looked like the above. Known as one of the most influential owners early in his time with the team, he was well-liked, prior to the 1982 strike. Afterwards, things didn’t go well. He didn’t pay his players well enough, and it caused resentment, especially with quarterback Doug Williams.

Doug Williams won a Super Bowl with the Washington Redskins, but that was after he spent time with the Bucs. He led the Bucs to the playoffs in three out of five seasons, but still was paid less than some third string quarterbacks. Neither he nor Williams would budge on finances, and Williams was traded away to become another player that achieved his greatest success after he left Tampa Bay.

He also had his public run-in with Bo Jackson. Many blame Bo for it, but some do believe that Hugh lied to him. Whomever was at fault, one of the best RB’s of his time declared that he would never come to Tampa Bay.

Do we hate Hugh the most?
