Doug Martin showed what the “Muscle Hamster” really can do when he’s healthy. He can straight up dominate. After rushing for over 1,400 yards in his rookie season, two injury plagued seasons saw him rush for less than 500 yards in each. After having his one year option declined, Martin showed up to camp in better shape than he’d ever been in and he ran for 1,402 yards – good enough for second most in the NFL.

More from The Pewter Plank

With the loss of Logan Mankins and signing J.R. Sweezy, the offensive line doesn’t appear to be suffering any kind of drop off. With the center position still somewhat in the air, you would think Joe Hawley would retain his position as this offensive line continues to grow and gel together. Continuity along the line will only further benefit Martin.

The problem is, we have yet to see Martin put together back to back good seasons. It’s been two seasons of injury and disappointment sandwiched between two 1,400 yard seasons. So what will 2016 hold for The Douggernaut?

Barring any injury, it’s a safe assumption that Martin will have another solid year in Dirk’s system and will likely be featured more now that we won’t suffer through the “Doug series, Sims series” alternating nonsense. Doug would get hot then be relegated to the bench because it “wasn’t his turn”. Moving forward, this is Martin’s backfield and he will gain more carries and more opportunities.
