Buccaneers training camp battle breakdowns: Placekicker
The Prediction
The Bucs, believe it or not, are in a win-win situation. There are two possible results to this competition. The first is that Roberto Aguayo steps up his game. He becomes the consistent kicker that Jason Licht saw in the scouting progress and the special teams play flies up the charts. His rookie season is forgotten and off he goes to a great career with the Bucs. That would certainly be a winning scenario, wouldn’t it?
Or, Nick Folk could win the job. We already talked about how consistent Folk has been throughout his career. Folk gets the job done in big games and big spots. Jets fans didn’t call him the “Folk Hero” because they wanted to put him into a comic book. The Bucs would do just fine if Nick Folk broke camp as the team’s placekicker.
Jason Licht and Dirk Koetter have made clear that they will move on from Aguayo if they have to. But that doesn’t mean they want to. Nobody longs to admit that they are wrong. We all certainly don’t. Neither do football executives. It would be in everyone’s best interest for the Roberto Aguayo pick to work out. Even though he is adaptable, picks like this are remembered, and when people look back on Licht’s tenure, mistakes like this would figure highly.
Next: Predicting Chris Godwin's role
In this case, however, the egg will be on the face of the general manager, as Nick Folk will win the job. What do you think?
