In 2013, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers traded a first and fourth round pick for the premier lockdown cornerback in the NFL; it turned into a huge disaster.

In all honesty, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have not had the most decorated decade; well, really ever since their Super Bowl in 2002.

In one article by Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport who sought to identify every team’s biggest mistake in the past decade, he had options to choose from; Davenport identified the trade for Darrelle Revis as the biggest blunder over the past ten years in Tampa Bay.

Coming off of an ACL injury with the New York Jets, Revis was dealt to the Buccaneers for the 13th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft and a future fourth rounder. At the time it looked like a steal for the Buccaneers who had just landed a premier lockdown cornerback, however Revis’s time in Tampa Bay was every bit of a disaster.

More from The Pewter Plank

"“Revis made the Pro Bowl again in 2013, but it was much more due to his reputation than performance. He wasn’t a great fit in Tampa’s Cover-2 defense, which required him to play a lot more zone than man” (Davenport via Bleacher Report)."

After just one season with the Buccaneers, Revis was released after no other team was willing to take on his $16 million salary and a corner with a bad knee. A good way to lose your job, as former Buccaneers’ general manager Mark Dominik did, is to trade a first round pick and more for a one-year rental.

"“The Jets used that No. 13 pick to draft Defensive Rookie of the Year Sheldon Richardson, and Revis went on to win the Super Bowl with the Patriots in 2014. Meanwhile, Tampa got a bag filled with rocks” (Davenport via Bleacher Report)."

The trade for Revis was typical Buccaneers luck, but 2019 looks like the year the tides are turning. It is full sails ahead in Tampa Bay with Bruce Arians at the helm.
