Plank: CB Carlton Davis and M.J. Stewart

Even though Carlton Davis came away with a fumble recovery that kept the 49ers off the board at the end of the half, he had a rough day in coverage. Davis was called for multiple pass interferences and defensive holdings in yesterday’s game that gave up crucial first downs to the Niners.

M.J. Stewart surrendered the only offensive touchdown scored by the 49ers, when Richie James burned him deep on an out and up. After a strong camp where he beat out Sean Murphy-Bunting for the nickel role, Stewart had a rough day at the office.

It was honestly hard to choose a defensive plank as the defense played relatively well, but someone had to get the plank. These two players staved off rookies for starting jobs this offseason with strong training camps and preseason, but you have to wonder if maybe Murphy-Bunting or Jamel Dean start to see a bit more time on the field.

As the Carolina Panthers and the Bucs are set to face off on Thursday night, Stewart and Davis are going to see themselves matched up with speedy receivers D.J. Moore and Curtis Samuel as well as savvy veteran tight end Greg Olsen. They will be looking for a bit of a bounce back performance.
