Bruce Arians impact on Jameis Winston showing for Buccaneers
Inconsistent, turnover machine
Jameis Winston, through his first four games under Lovie Smith threw six touchdowns, seven interceptions, and had an average quarterback rating of 76.23 in his rookie season back in 2015. So this one is a little flawed as this was his first four games of his NFL career but nonetheless, it wasn’t the best start.

The team had a 1-3 record through four and wound up finishing the year at a record of 6-10. Jameis threw 22 touchdowns and 15 interceptions in the Lovie Smith system in his one season as Winston’s mentor. Smith was fired after just one year with Winston and offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter took over as head coach in Winston’s second year.
Koetter’s take over was something many Bucs fans wanted at the time, and the move was seen as favorable when Dirk first got the job. It was believed that Jameis was going to thrive in Koetter’s system, and at the threat of losing him to another head coaching position, the Bucs decided to promote him in Tampa.
Through the first four games together Jameis threw eight touchdowns, eight interceptions and had an average quarterback rating of 74.35. Winston would go on to finish with a record of 15 wins and 23 losses under Dirk Koetter, and never quite displayed the consistency that the Bucs needed from him over the past three seasons.
After finishing the 2018 season at 5-11 the Bucs ownership decided it was time to move on from Dirk Koetter. We can see how well his offensive system is doing now as he is the offensive coordinator for the floundering Atlanta Falcons.
