ComPewter Analysis: Gap widening between Ronald Jones, Peyton Barber

Analytics paint a much different picture
Using Football Outsiders and Pro Football Focus as the sources for analytical data for this article, Jones’ efficiency blows that of Barber’s out of the water for the pewter and red. Not only is Jones better in the box score, but also far better when taking a look at a player’s efficiency and percentage of successful plays above the league average.
Football Outsiders uses two main metrics to rank players: DYAR and DVOA. DYAR averages a player’s total value, while DVOA measures a player’s value per play. Thus far this season, Jones as the eighth most valuable back per play and is responsible for nearly 14 percent of successful plays above the league average; Barber ranks as the 21st back in the league in DVOA, responsible for -6 percent of successful plays above the league average.
Overall, Football Outsiders ranks Jones as the tenth most valuable running back in the league, and Barber remains 21st in the league in DYAR as well. Jones has a success rate of 56 percent of his touches, while Jones has a success rate of just 44 percent of his touches.
According to PFF (subscription required), Jones has a grade of 83.7; last week he was the highest graded running back in the entire league with a score of 88. By the same metric, Barber is grading out at a far lower 66.3. Clearly the data shows that the chasm between Jones and Barber is far wider than it appears in the box score.
