Looking at the league leaders

Taking a look at the cold, hard numbers, Chris Godwin is not hard to find among the league leaders, as he sits at the top of the list in both yards and touchdowns. With 662 receiving yards and six touchdown grabs from quarterback Jameis Winston, Godwin ranks ahead of the likes of Adam Theilen, Michael Thomas, and Keenan Allen.

More from The Pewter Plank

Godwin is currently third in the league in catches with 43, but has done so on just 55 targets. This number is far lower than the two receivers in front of him as Michael Thomas and Cooper Kupp have 67 and 69 targets respectively. The Tampa Bay receiver also leads the league in receptions that have resulted in first downs with 38.

In plays that result in more than 20 yards, classified as “big plays” by ESPN, Godwin also leads the league in that category as well. Of Godwin’s 43 catches on the season thus far, 13 of them have resulted in more than 20 yards for the Bucs’ offense; the next highest rate is Jacksonville Jaguars’ receiver D.J. Chark with 11.

Taking Godwin’s numbers thus far, dividing them by six, then multiplying them by 16, the third year receiver is on pace for 1,765 yards receiving, 16 touchdowns, and 115 catches on the season for the pewter and red offense. I’d say those numbers demonstrate a massive jump in production from year-two to year-three.
