A plan at QB for the immediate future

At this point, it seems like Winston’s best chance at returning to Tampa is via the franchise tag as he has not received a contract extension with just six games remaining on his rookie deal. He has been more of the same Jameis this season, having some good games followed by some atrocious ones; he has two games this season with four or more interceptions including last week against the New Orleans Saints.

If the Bucs decide to move on from Jameis Winston, they would be better off going after a bridge quarterback for the next year or two until sticking their neck back out to get their next franchise quarterback. Tyrod Taylor, Josh Rosen, and potentially Nick Foles (if Gardner Minshew takes over next year) come to mind as some top options who could man the ship under center in Tampa if they do choose to move on from Winston and bridge for a year or two.

The problems in Tampa Bay are not a quick fix nor can they be solved in just one year. With the season taking the turn it has, it would not be shocking to see a large amount of roster turnover this offseason. While Jameis Winston may very well be the best option under center for the Bucs in 2020, there is a reason that he does not have a new contract at this point as the organization continues to weigh their options.

Rushed rebuilds never end well, and the Buccaneers cannot afford to cut corners and repeat the failures of the past decade. It makes no sense to bring a rookie quarterback in at the early stages of a rebuild, and instead the Bucs should add a veteran who can guide them through the reconstruction of the franchise.
