Should the Buccaneers give Ryan Griffin a shot in 2020?

The perennial backup, Ryan Griffin doesn’t complain, he just does what is asked of him. Perhaps not enough is asked of him.

Quarterback Ryan Griffin Has been here as long as Jameis Winston, but only played in one drive, in 2019 (which was his first in a regular-season game, against the Colts). I don’t figure that many Bucs fans know much about the man.

After all, it’s not like they have had much of a reason to know. In pre-season, he has looked fairly sharp to very good. It has never translated into playing time of more than two passes on one drive, and that was only because Blaine Gabbart was out for the season.

There isn’t much out there to learn about Griffin in the NFL (he was signed by the Saints as an undrafted free agent in 2013, In 2015 claimed off waivers by the Bucs).

More from The Pewter Plank

We will first look at his college days at Tulane University and Chaminade College Prep. As a junior in high school, Griffin threw for 3,358 yards, scoring 32 times through the air with only 8 picks.

Do you catch that? 32 TD’s close to Jameis in 2019 but only 8 int’s. At Tulane, he redshirted and then played for three seasons. He threw for almost 10,000 yards and 56 touchdowns. Ryan Griffin had four games where he threw for over 400 yards, and ten 300 hundred yard games while quarterbacking The Green Wave.

Griffin is under contract through 2020 with the Buccaneers. That will have put him with the Bucs for six seasons, possibly one more than Winston if he isn’t re-signed.

Through 5 seasons so far, the Buccaneers know basically nothing about what Ryan can do in a regular season game. They have seen nothing in any of the pre-season games that would stop them from re-signing him. They have kept him under contract since 2015, Jameis’ rookie  year.
