Tampa Bay Buccaneers can (and can’t) win with Jameis Winston
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers can absolutely win with Jameis Winston under center. They also can’t win with Winston under center.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are currently in the process of making a decision on what to do at quarterback and that includes whether or not to bring back Jameis Winston for another season, or to pursue other options in free-agency and the NFL Draft.
When looking at the Buccaneers and their options, the truth is that they’re in a bit of a dilemma when it comes to Winston.
The can absolutely win with Winston, but they also can’t win. What do I mean?
They absolutely can win…
The Buccaneers can absolutely make the playoffs with Jameis Winston at quarterback. He actually graded well according to Pro Football Focus and it will be his second year in the system.
Winston has talent around him and has shown a high upside to becoming a potential franchise QB.
The capability of the offense is absolutely unreal with what you could see from Winston and his play-makers- guys like Chris Godwin and Mike Evans- if the Bucs can put a solid offensive line in front of him.
But they can’t…
But, just as promising as this 2020 season could be, Tampa Bay can’t win with Winston under center, either. At least, not the Winston we saw in 2019.
I don’t care to hear excuses. You simply can’t win when you have a quarterback turn the ball over nearly 40 times (30 interceptions and 12 fumbles- five lost).
That’s a clip of two turnovers per game.
Was everything that happened in the offense Winston’s fault? No. But he certainly has to take much of the blame.
Something has to give…
If the Buccaneers do choose to bring Winston back, something has to give.
Tampa Bay can absolutely win with Winston at the helm, but the turnovers have to stop. He has the talent and arm skill to be a great QB, but that all starts with cutting down on the interceptions. Or, we’ll be sitting here having the same exact discussions at this point next year.
