The XFL is unable to continue due to COVID-19, and now many former players are looking for a job. Here are the best fits for the Buccaneers.

The most recent chapter on the XFL has come to an end marking the second league to fold in as many years. The product in the XFL was far better than the AAF, but the recent events with COVID-19 proved too much for the new league to overcome.

The effects of the XFL’s existence will be felt in the NFL in the 2020 season, ranging from additional players to positive rule changes.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers likely finished the majority of their free-agent search, but they may be able to find a good fit with some of the available players. The Bucs were fortunate to share a stadium with the XFL’s Tampa Bay Vipers, and that gives them some options that are already in town.

Quinton Flowers, QB, Tampa Bay Vipers

The Tampa Bay Vipers were one of the most frustrating XFL teams to watch as they inexplicably never gave the full starting role to Quinton Flowers. Flowers, the former quarterback for USF, was electric in college and was able to translate his game to the XFL playing a limited role.

Flowers was often overlooked while at USF, but he was an extremely capable dual-threat quarterback that kept his team semi-relevant in the national media.

Lamar Jackson has become the prototype for the dual-threat QB, but Flowers was not that far off in college. Flowers and Jackson both averaged 8.3 yards per pass attempt and Jackson averaged 6.3 yards per rush while Flowers posted a close 6.1 yards per rush.

NFL scouts didn’t see Flowers as a thrower at the next level and he was signed as a running back by the Bengals and Colts before eventually landing with the Vipers.

Lamar Jackson is changing the status quo with quarterbacks in the NFL and the Buccaneers could take a chance on a talented player like Flowers to use as the third quarterback on the roster. Ryan Griffin is consistent but isn’t the most exciting QB3 in the NFL.

Quinton Flowers could give the Buccaneers an exciting gadget player to utilize who could play a similar role to Taysom Hill.
