Cameron Wake

If the Buccaneers want a veteran with more experience than Bennett, Cameron Wake is another option to serve as a more-seasoned depth piece. At 38 years old, Wake may not surprise too many people in his 12th season in the NFL, but he will bring more than sacks to the defense.

The Buccaneers are incredibly young on the defensive side of the ball outside of Lavonte David and Ndamukong Suh. Very few of the starters even have more than a season or two of experience playing in the NFL, and Wake would immediately be a leader on the team.

While his experience in the NFL would be Wake’s main selling point, he could still provide some pressure on downs where Barrett or JPP are off the field. These two will play most of the defensive snaps in many sets, but the Bucs will rely on their depth pieces for approximately 20% of the total snaps.

Cameron Wake has done very well with individual accolades in his career, but he has made the playoffs far less than one would expect for a player of his caliber. Wake is probably doing everything in his power to join another playoff team to make a run at the Super Bowl before retirement.

Due to his lower-than-average production in 2019, the Bucs could bring in Wake on a cheap contract for one season, and in this time, the defense can grow, and Nelson can improve his game to step into that role in 2021.
