Tampa Bay Buccaneers could be adding a veteran DL to its roster soon

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are still looking to make some moves as they prepare to finalize their roster for the 2020 season.

The Buccaneers made a few roster cuts last week and, as a result, still have some openings as battles for spots on the 53-man roster will begin to heat up in the near future.

The Athletic’s Greg Auman reported Monday afternoon that the Buccaneers had hosted former Kansas City Chiefs DT Xavier Williams over the weekend and he was getting a physical today.

If that is the case, Williams could rejoin Bruce Arians- who he played for back in Arizona- and would provide quality veteran depth along the defensive line.

Xavier Williams could give the Buccaneers the depth they need along the front-seven

Williams’ best two seasons came in 2017 with the Cardinals- when he played 11 games and started one- and 2018 with the Chiefs- when he played in 16 games and started four. Over the course of those two seasons, Williams racked up 67 total tackles, three sacks and three tackles for loss.

Williams, still just 28 years old, isn’t going to be the ‘starter’ option for the Buccaneers, but he sure could provide quality depth as a veteran to the roster.

One of the chief concerns coming into this season has been the depth behind the starters along the front-seven. Williams would be able to fill in and help stabilize that defensive line for a relatively cheap contract.

The Buccaneers could benefit from these opt outs. dark. Next

It will be interesting to see what happens here, but it’s apparent that there is interest between the two parties and Tampa Bay needs to add depth to its defensive line. This seems like a solid fit that wouldn’t hurt the cap and potentially would provide another usable body for Todd Bowles and Co.
