The missing piece for the Buccaneers

Tom Brady

Are there longer-tenured players on the Buccaneers that deserve their first ring before Tom Brady gets his seventh? Absolutely. But Tom Brady desperately needs this win for his legacy. And remember, Tom Brady’s legacy will now forever be tied to Tampa Bay’s, so Brady retaining his GOAT status is something Bucs fans have to stay behind.

More from The Pewter Plank

Tom Brady is the undisputed GOAT, for now. The issue for Brady and his legacy is that there is a young player in the NFL that looks poised to challenge for that role down the road. Fortunately, Brady gets a chance to play him this weekend.

Patrick Mahomes is currently the most talented quarterback in the NFL, taking that title away from Aaron Rodgers. Mahomes makes a compelling case as the most talented quarterback ever with his current skill set, but, understandably, some fans will want a larger sample size before crowning him just yet.

Regardless, in the last three seasons, Mahomes has made it to the Super Bowl twice and lost in overtime in the AFC championship in his lone miss. Up until the point, Mahomes has one post-season loss in his career, which makes a compelling case as an early GOAT candidate for the future.

If Brady wants to keep his status forever, a win this weekend keeps that within his reach. Regardless of Mahomes’s stats and accomplishments in the post-Brady era, the argument would always come down to the in-person Brady-Mahomes matchups, and no one would ever forget when the 43-year old Brady in his first year with a new team beat the 25-year old MVP candidate on an established team.

Mahomes’ legacy is already looking like it will be tough to beat, but there is no defeating the above argument. If Brady wants to keep his title as the GOAT and put more space between him and Mahomes, he has to win this game on Sunday for the sake of his legacy.
