The Buccaneers don’t need Odell Beckham Jr.

We all knew that offseason rumors about the Buccaneers would start soon, but it was hard to imagine that they would start this soon and be this hard to believe. No, the Bucs are almost assuredly not going to add Odell Beckham Jr., although it is a fun idea.

On Get Up this morning, Jeff Darlington cautiously tossed the idea out for a potential pairing between the Bucs and the star receiver, but a more in-depth analysis reveals how ludicrous this idea is. To be fair, far more ludicrous acts have occurred in Tampa in the past year, but this still seems hard to believe.

For starters, for the Buccaneers to add OBJ, they would have to part ways with Chris Godwin. While both have recently struggled with injuries, it is difficult to justify one over the other as the clear better option, especially when Godwin is such a better blocker than Beckham.

More from The Pewter Plank

Beckham Jr. is a fantastic talent who has struggled to find team success that matches his own, but Chris Godwin has shown a level of dominant consistency in receiving and blocking that make a case for him as well. At best, this is a toss-up, and to pretend otherwise is ignoring Godwin’s recent success during the past two seasons.

Back to the scenario at hand, for OBJ to end up in Tampa Bay, the Bucs would have to let Godwin walk in free agency, an unlikely situation in and of itself. The Buccaneers would only let Godwin walk based on money, but then we are expected to believe that they would go out and pay OBJ the same thing?

This scenario assumes that the Bucs let Godwin walk because he asks for too much money, and they would then trade for Odell Beckham Jr. only to pay him at or above what Chris Godwin would ask for. How does this make any sense at all?

Odell Beckham Jr. and the Bucs could be fun, but not realistic

Beckham would enter an offense where he still isn’t the number one and would have to eke out an existence in another run-first offense with Mike Evans, Rob Gronkowski, and potentially Antonio Brown.

It is undoubtedly fun to image OBJ in pewter and red, and while Bucs fans know not to say never regarding crazy trades or signings, Odell Beckham Jr. appears to be out of reach in every conceivable scenario.
