The Buccaneers need to keep their current corners

Patrick Peterson

The evaluation of Patrick Peterson will vary from person to person. The Buccaneer secondary is not easy to evaluate, as it will rotate from a group that can shut potent passing offenses down to giving up massive yards to average quarterbacks in back-to-back weeks.

The inconsistency is frustrating, especially in a Todd Bowles defense, so it makes sense that some people would like a veteran presence in the group like Peterson.

Peterson is one of the best man corners in the NFL with a few good years left, but should the Bucs make a change when it looks like they have a winning formula established?

Carlton Davis, Jamel Dean, and Sean Murphy-Bunting are all trending in the right direction, and taking reps away from any of them for a veteran could upset the balance for the future. Davis is on the verge of a massive deal as one of the top corners in the league, Dean flashes speed and greatness on the outside, and SMB thrives in the nickel spot.

Injuries could be the only reason to pursue Peterson, but at that point, a player like Ross Cockrell makes far more sense as a cheaper option that played well beyond expectations last season.

Peterson could probably elevate the unit for a year or two at his current level, but the damage it could cause to the young defense long-term should keep the Buccaneers from pulling the trigger on someone they could only keep for a short time.
