A’Shawn Robinson is the leader the Buccaneers were missing

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson this offseason not only to bolster their defensive front, but also to help usher in a culture change.

Tampa Bay’s defense lacked a killer instinct and was even considered soft last year, and there was a serious culture problem permeating the locker room. Yaya Diaby called out his teammates, implying that some players weren’t fully bought in. Heck, even 14-year veteran Lavonte David admitted that teammates called him out for loafing at times during the season.

The front office made it a priority to overhaul the leadership in the locker room and bring a new attitude and more accountability to the team. With every word he speaks, it’s becoming more apparent that Robinson was exactly the kind of player the Buccaneers needed.

Entering his 11th NFL season, Robinson has gained a reputation as a hard-nosed tone setter. He’s a vocal leader who isn’t afraid to call out his teammates and ensure players are being held accountable.

He was a part of the Rams’ Super Bowl squad in 2021, so he knows what it takes to lift the Lombardi Trophy, and he’s going to hold this young Bucs defense to that championship standard.

Robinson spoke to reporters after practice Sunday, providing some sound bites that will be music to Bucs fans’ ears.

He discussed the attitude of this Tampa Bay defense and how he’s one of the ringleaders when it comes to trash talking.

“It brings tenacity. It brings that fight, that will, that juice, that hunger. It brings that flow of practice,  rises the level of competition… Being combative brings nothing but greatness. So that’s all I try to do is make it as tough as I can because I’m going to talk trash every single play. That’s just who I am. Good or bad, I’m going to talk trash.”

Robinson didn’t stop there. He talked about the defense’s goal of coming together as a team and striving for greatness as a unit — not just as individuals.

“All we focus on is making sure everybody is locked in, held to the standard, communicating, being consistent, and dominating everything we do. Leave no stone unturned. Eat everything on your plate.”

Listening to Robinson’s press conference had me ready to run through a wall. I can only imagine the impact he’s having inside the Buccaneers locker room.

Tampa Bay was sorely missing a leader with this level of intensity last season, and Robinson’s presence should pay dividends as he helps stoke the flames of a young, hungry defensive unit.
