The Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense was a massive, massive problem last season. Most of the responsibility of the collapse can be traced to an entire unit that failed under Todd Bowles. There were so many problems from terrible tackling to a non-existent pass rush, but the common refrain on the defense is that they were a lethal combination of soft and ill-disciplined, collapsing any time they were put under duress while offering no such pressure on opposing quarterbacks.

While the Bucs did not oblige in pursuing elite pass rushers Maxx Crosby and Trey Hendrickson, they did land a few quality pieces in free agency, namely A'Shawn Robinson and Alex Anzalone to beef up the defense. They also picked up another player for the front seven, reuniting with defensive tackles Rakeem "Nacho" Nunez-Roches.

Speaking to the Buccaneers press core after practice, starting outside linebacker YaYa Diaby was full of praise, via Pewter Report, for his new defensive teammates. Diaby proclaimed that he loves what A-Rob is bringing to the table for the Bucs defense and enjoys working with him, while he also praised Nacho's energy, claiming he likes how "loud" he is. He then said, via River Wells, that he liked how the defense was getting at it overall.

The Buccaneers need more energy on defense

Todd Bowles is in a do or die year for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this coming 2026 NFL regular season. If the Bucs do not make the postseason again, then he will be a goner. And much of his success will hinge on how the defense does, and the defense has always been almost entirely his responsibility, for better or for worse.

It's clear with the additions that the Bucs made in free agency as well as the Miami Hurricanes duo of Rueben Bain Jr. and Keionte Scott through the draft that the Buccaneers want to have an edge again on defense. They completely lost their swagger last year and were totally lethargic, but the Buccaneers now have players who bring energy and a pep in their step, guys who are nasty and will stop at nothing to bring down the ball carrier with a vengeance.

Hopefully, that attitude is infectious, because it's obvious that YaYa Diaby and a lot of the other talented, underperforming players on the Bucs defense have been looking for a new vibe in the locker room. And Bucs fans will also hope that Bowles encourages the vibe, too.
