The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Baker Mayfield were engaged in contract extension talks throughout the offseason.
Mayfield set a training camp deadline to get a deal done, and that deadline came and went without a new contract. Now, Mayfield will play out the final year of his contract with his long-term future in Tampa Bay uncertain.
Speaking to the media after Thursday’s training camp practice, Mayfield made it clear he was disappointed the two sides couldn’t reach an agreement.

Mayfield didn’t mince words at his press conference, delivering his bluntest comments since arriving in Tampa Bay.
“I’m at a point in my career and understanding what I’ve brought to this franchise… leadership-wise and even play-wise it’s been some of the best years of my career and I think it’s only going to trend upwards… Disappointing in that regard to feel disrespected a little bit. That’s really the disappointing part, to feel undervalued after thinking you’ve earned it”
Mayfield didn’t stop there, making it clear he believes his play warrants a contract comparable to other franchise quarterbacks around the NFL.
“I can sit here and look at other quarterbacks and peers and evaluate myself based on that and put myself in certain categories, and I deserve to be compensated for that. I think I’m a franchise quarterback. I’ve been told I’m a franchise quarterback. It’s been said publicly from ownership down here, so to not have a deal done is very disappointing.”
Mayfield ended things with a cold-blooded warning to the organization: the price tag is only going up after this year.

Mayfield’s comments made it clear the failed contract negotiations have put a chip on his shoulder, and he’ll use them as motivation entering the 2026 season. He believes he’s already established himself as Tampa Bay’s franchise quarterback, and he’ll set out to drive that point home this season before returning to the negotiating table next offseason.
