The Tampa Bay Buccaneers came to an agreement with Baker Mayfield at the 11th hour, signing him to a three-year, $165 million contract extension just days ahead of the 2026 NFL season.
The front office, fan base and Mayfield himself can all take a huge sigh of relief knowing a deal has been struck that ties Mayfield to Tampa Bay through 2029. There will be no franchise-altering quarterback decision to make next offseason, and Mayfield’s impending free agency won’t be hanging over the team’s head throughout the season.
Mayfield’s extension changes everything and brings an entirely new sense of urgency heading into the 2026 season.

Fans are on cloud nine with Mayfield’s unexpected last-minute extension. But the honeymoon phase won’t last long.
The biggest contract in franchise history doesn’t come without expectations, after all.
Mayfield’s annual value of $55 million makes him one of the NFL’s highest-paid quarterbacks. He is now one of only eight players reaching that benchmark, joining the likes of Patrick Mahomes, Dak Prescott, Joe Burrow, Josh Allen, Matthew Stafford, Jordan Love and Trevor Lawrence.
Tampa Bay didn’t reach the playoffs last season, squandering a 6-2 start and finishing 8-9. Mayfield’s individual performance also collapsed down the stretch. After an MVP-caliber first half of the season, the final eight games were arguably his worst stretch of football as a Buccaneer.
By offering such a lucrative extension, the organization is betting that given what’s been a Jekyll and Hyde tenure for Mayfield in Tampa Bay, the real Mayfield is the one who delivered an elite season in 2024, followed by a strong first half of 2025 — not the one who struggled late last season.
He’ll need to consistently perform at an elite level for this deal to age well for Tampa Bay.
Mayfield needs to do more than simply get this team back into the postseason. He needs to prove he’s capable of leading the Buccaneers deep into the playoffs and competing for a championship. Tampa Bay isn’t handing out a historic contract for the sake of winning nine or 10 games and losing in the first round.
The organization clearly believes this Bucs team is capable of competing for a Super Bowl with Mayfield at the helm, and now their franchise quarterback needs to prove them right.
That’s a 180 from Mayfield’s usual M.O., which is to channel any perceived slights into playing with a chip on his shoulder and proving his doubters wrong. There was an expectation that Mayfield would do just that this season — go scorched earth and make the Buccaneers regret not paying him sooner.
But now, for the first time in Mayfield’s career, a team has fully bought in and committed to him as its long-term franchise quarterback. He’s finally found a home and a team that believes in him.
Baker Mayfield doesn’t need to prove anybody wrong anymore; he just needs to prove the Buccaneers right.
