One of the biggest storylines of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ offseason has come to a close at the final buzzer, as the team has signed Baker Mayfield to a massive three-year, $165 million contract extension.
It's the biggest contract signing in the history of the franchise, by a significant margin. The deal kicks in after this season and runs from 2027-29, so the Bucs will have four more years of Mayfield as their signal-caller.
This comes after Mayfield cut off talks at the start of training camp and publicly lambasted the organization for their initial offer that left him feeling disrespected.
Things were tense between the two parties as Mayfield prepared to enter a contract year and potentially become a free agent next offseason, but all’s well that ends well. Tampa Bay has made the ultimate commitment to Mayfield as its franchise quarterback, giving the team the ultimate vibe boost ahead of Sunday’s season opener in the process.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers put Baker Mayfield contract drama to bed
Mayfield’s new annual value of $55 million per year puts him on pace with other top quarterbacks that have been paid in recent years. He joins Dak Prescott, Patrick Mahomes, Matthew Stafford, Trevor Lawrence, Jordan Love, Josh Allen, and Joe Burrow as the quarterbacks making at least $55 million per season.
Mayfield is second in the NFL in touchdown passes and third in passing yards since arriving in Tampa Bay in 2023. His elite production certainly warranted this kind of commitment, and while this deal may look costly now, rest assured that it will age like fine wine as the market continues to inflate.
With quarterbacks like Lamar Jackson, Sam Darnold, Caleb Williams, and Drake Maye set to earn new contracts over the next few years, Mayfield could be outside the top ten in annual value by the time this deal comes to an end.
Extending Mayfield was a move the Buccaneers absolutely had to make. The contract dispute with their star quarterback was going to be a recurring storyline and distraction throughout the season, and getting it done ahead of the season opener sends an emphatic message about how much the organization believes in Mayfield as its starting quarterback.
The breakthrough couldn't have come at a better time, allowing Mayfield to enter the season with long-term security, and without a looming contract negotiation hanging over his head. The deal comes just weeks after the Buccaneers were able to re-sign Vita Vea through the 2027 season, and despite a drama-filled offseason, the front office has managed to navigate the minefield and keep two of their franchise cornerstones home in Tampa Bay.
Now, it's time for Mayfield to deliver an incredible season and prove that the organization's decision to commit to him as their franchise quarterback was worth every penny.
