The Tampa Bay Buccaneers made improvements across the entire roster this offseason, but no area of the roster improved more than the defensive front.
The team drafted edge rusher Rueben Bain Jr. with the No. 15 overall pick, coming off a season in which he tied an all-time college football record with 83 pressures.
They signed another edge rusher in Al-Quadin Muhammad, who notched 11 sacks last season for the Detroit Lions.
They even bolstered the defensive tackle position, signing veteran A’Shawn Robinson and drafting DeMonte Capehart.
For a team that’s struggled as much as Tampa Bay has to generate pressure with the front four, the massive upgrades to the defensive front should pay dividends for the entire defensive unit.
On paper, it’s the best pass rush Jason Licht has put together in years, and Yaya Diaby is poised to be the biggest beneficiary.
Yaya Diaby is set up for a career year after Buccaneers offseason
Since being drafted in 2023, Yaya Diaby has been dealt the tall task of carrying the Buccaneers pass rush.
He led Tampa Bay in sacks in two of his three pro seasons, with 7.5 in his rookie year and 7.0 sacks last season.
He hasn’t been able to reach double-digit sacks and cement himself as one of the NFL’s premier pass rushers just yet, but a large part of that is because the team hasn’t surrounded him with a quality supporting cast.
They tried to make a splash last year with veteran Haason Reddick, but he totaled just 2.5 sacks and proved to be a major disappointment. The other starting pass rusher that lined up across Diaby throughout his early career was Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, who has since retired from the NFL.
Things got so bad last season that the team brought in a 36-year-old Jason Pierre-Paul to try to inject some juice into the pass rush.
The new and improved Bucs defensive front is the best that Diaby has ever been a part of. It’ll force opposing offenses to think twice before double-blocking him, and he'll get way more one-on-one opportunities to wreak havoc on quarterbacks.
Diaby has already been a solid player in Tampa Bay, but now, he’s poised to take the next step into elite status and have the best season of his career. It couldn’t come at a better time for Diaby as he enters a contract year before hitting free agency next offseason.
If Diaby takes advantage of this new situation and benefits from his improved supporting cast the way he’s expected to, he’ll earn a massive payday next offseason, and the Bucs will be at the front of the line trying to sign him long term.
