Get excited, Bucs fans! The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will reportedly bring back their fan-favorite all-pewter color rush uniforms for the 2026 season.
“I was told by a reliable source that the Bucs will be wearing their all-pewter uniforms again this season,” wrote Pewter Report’s Scott Reynolds. “I’ve been told that the pewter jerseys could be worn in the preseason or as a road alternate.”
The uniforms were first released in 2020 and were worn three times during their debut season. But from 2021 to 2023, they were worn just once per season, all resulting in losses. The team’s overall record in the pewter uniforms is 2-4.
What happened to the Buccaneers’ pewter color rush uniforms?
The Buccaneers did not wear the uniforms at all in 2024 or 2025. With the white creamsicles returning last season in honor of the franchise’s 50th anniversary, many thought the pewter uniforms had been shelved for good. The NFL currently allows teams to wear a maximum of four different uniform tops per year, and the Bucs have reached the limit with their home, away, orange creamsicle, and white creamsicle options.
The main reason for the disappearance of the pewter uniforms is likely the extreme Tampa heat. The Buccaneers wear white at home until November each season, forcing opposing road teams to wear dark colors in those conditions. Wearing a head-to-toe pewter ensemble at home would directly clash with this strategy, which is why the uniforms have been relegated to road alternates.
Tampa Bay had a prime opportunity to wear them as a road alternate in 2024 against the Dallas Cowboys, who wear white at home. However, the game was scheduled in prime time, and the Bucs brass reportedly preferred to wear the classic red uniforms for national brand recognition purposes.
Another reason the pewter uniforms fell out of favor within the organization comes down to what is always the bottom line in this business: money.
The Buccaneers brought back the creamsicle uniforms in 2023, which are popular not only with Bucs fans, but leaguewide. The popularity and nostalgic appeal of the throwback drove merchandise sales that the pewter uniforms simply could not compete with.
It is reasonable to speculate that the success of the creamsicle throwback led the organization to pivot toward featuring it multiple times a year while forgoing the pewter uniforms.
It remains unclear whether Tampa Bay will wear the pewter uniforms only in the preseason or also as a regular-season road alternate in 2026. For regular-season use, the NFL would have to update its rules to allow an extra uniform option, or the Bucs would need to remove one of their existing alternates, which is unlikely.
No matter how it happens, it will be refreshing to see one of the best uniform combinations in the NFL back on the field in 2026.
