Anyone could see that a healthy Michael Penix Jr. at the helm of the Atlanta Falcons offense could present a danger to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the rest of the NFC South, because the young quarterback can really spin the football. His upper-echelon arm strength and downfield accuracy are his claim to fame, and the worry for the Falcons' rivals was that new head coach Kevin Stefanski would be able to help Penix's development and unlock a new level to his game.
Penix has only appeared in five games so far this season after starting the year injured, but it is already abundantly clear that the Falcons do indeed have a reason to believe in Penix as the face of their franchise.
Penix is completing exactly two third of his passes for 1,157 yards, averaging a whopping 8.0 yards per attempt that ties for fifth-most in the NFL along with 9 touchdowns to just 1 interception. The Falcons signal caller has a QBR close to 110 and a TQBR approaching 70. He has been one of the best quarterbacks in the game this season.
Michael Penix Jr. is becoming a star for the Atlanta Falcons
You had better believe that if the Buccaneers had ever run the risk of sleeping on Penix before, they sure as heck are not going to do that now. The Bucs defense has stood tall against some of the better quarterbacks in the league like Dak Prescott, Joe Burrow, Jordan Love, and Bryce Young last weekend in the 43-13 win over the Carolina Panthers.
Penix is actually outplaying all of them right now this season in terms of his accuracy, efficiency, and ability to avoid turnovers. The Buccaneers actually have one of the best secondaries in the NFL right now, which is a bit of a surprise since they lost their best shutdown corner of the 2025 NFL season in Jamel Dean to the AFC North's Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Buccaneers are 12th in the league in pass yards per attempt allowed and have held opposing quarterbacks to a pitiful TD to INT ratio of 10 to 8. With the way Penix is challenging defenses down the field and avoiding turnovers, the Bucs need to play disciplined and take advantage of any opportunity the Falcons' signal-caller gives to them to make a play on the ball.
With Penix blossoming into an elite quarterback and surrounded by weapons like Bijan Robinson, Drake London and Kyle Pitts, Todd Bowles needs to have this defense ready to play their best game of the season and shut down the Dirty Birds.
