The Tampa Bay Buccaneers faced a familiar foe on Sunday, as cornerback Jamel Dean returned to Raymond James Stadium as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers after spending the first seven seasons of his career in Tampa.

Ahead of the 2025 season, Tampa Bay's front office strong-armed Dean into revising his contract, giving him the choice to either shave a year off the end of his deal and take a significant pay cut or be released outright. Dean obliged and played out the final year of his contract in Tampa Bay, which happened to be the best season of his career, before signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers in free agency.

In his first trip back to Raymond James Stadium, Dean turned his homecoming into a revenge game for the ages, helping Pittsburgh escape with a victory.

Dean was the best defender for either team, totaling six passes defended while locking down Bucs receivers all game long.

When it mattered most, with the game tied 16-16 late in the fourth quarter, Dean intercepted a pass from Jalon Daniels intended for Emeka Egbuka and returned it 40 yards to the 3-yard line, just barely missing out on a pick-six.

It was a statement game for Dean, who showed the Buccaneers what they’re missing as he continues to separate himself as one of the NFL's best cornerbacks.

Dean entered the week as PFF’s No. 7 ranked cornerback. He’s been playing at an elite level since last season, and the Buccaneers might be regretting their decision to push him out the door.

The former Buccaneer could have taken a victory lap postgame, but instead he had a wholesome moment talking about his relationship with Todd Bowles, who coached him for seven years.

“I was like ‘I guess I gotta go against the guy that taught me the game of football.’ I don’t want his teachings to go to waste, so hopefully he’s proud of me knowing that everything he taught me has translated to another organization."

It was no secret how much returning to Raymond James Stadium meant to Dean, who spoke throughout the week about the emotion of returning to his old stomping grounds. He was even named a weekly captain by the Steelers for the occasion.

Dean delivered, playing arguably the best game of his career against his former team and going back to Pittsburgh with a win.
